Process of my painting Autumn Sunset.
I was playing around with fluids acrylics on watercolor paper. I decided I was going to go out of my comfort zone and use purple for an Autumn sunset. Purple is not a color that comes easy to me but I’m always trying to stretch myself.
This painting, which I titled ‘Sunset,’ turned out beautifully. I especially loved how the purple in the sky came together. Inspired by the result, I decided to create a larger version on canvas.
THE CANVAS VERSION
Creating texture and using flowy paints was my main goal. The watercolor effects, in particular, fascinated me. To bring Autumn Sunset vision to life, I covered my canvas panel with modeling paste, using a palette knife to create various textures. I also incorporated gramineae I collected on a walk and leftover sewing threads for added detail.

After letting everything dry for 24 hours, I began painting with fluid acrylics, inks, and water to achieve a watercolor effect. Combining different techniques is something I truly enjoy. To add texture, I applied some cellophane to the wet paint.
Once the paint was dry I removed the cellophane and you can see the textures that were created with the cellophane. You can also see the textures of the threads.
Autumn Sunset was not finished just yet. I let the painting sit for a few days to give myself time to think about the next steps. Afterward, I applied several layers of paint to certain areas, adding even more depth. To create contrast with the gramineae, I decided to paint them in sepia
Again I let it sit for several days as I thought something was missing. It wasn’t finished just yet. I decided to added more green at the bottom of the mountains and on the land and it now it felt finished.
